Casa Pero is only a short drive from the spectacular Sibillini Mountain National Park , which offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the whole of central Italy . Thankfully the area remains relatively undisturbed and off the usual tourist routes apart from winter skiers and intrepid walkers and climbers. The highest peak, Monte Vettore, rises to almost 2500 metres, and is flanked by other notable peaks including Monte Sibilla, Monte Priora and Monte Rotondo
With its’ wildflower meadows, it’s gin clear mountain streams and waterfalls, it is a haven for ramblers, mountain bikers, skiers and those mere mortals who simply want to experience this sublime landscape. The literal high spot is a visit to the remarkable upland plateau of the Piane Grande, overlooked by the summit of Monte Vettore. Guarded by the solitary hill village of Castelluccio, it is one of Italy’s natural wonders with its’ breathtakingly colourful tapestry of wildflowers.
From Castelluccio you can drop down to Visso, an architectural gem, bisected by a network of mountain streams. From there it is a short drive to historic Norcia, with its grid iron layout, famous for its delicatessens and for boar hunting.
No trip to the Sibillini Mountains will be complete without visiting Lake Fiastra , and walking beside the upper reaches of the River Tenna in the stunning valley of the Gola dell Infernaccio. Take a picnic and immerse yourself in this stunning mountain scenery.
One of the Marche ‘s principal winter resorts is at Sassotetto, high above Sarnano. With its ski lifts and hotels it is a popular skiing and snowboarding destination particularly with Italian families.
